The year 2010 was ushered out a few days ago. As it was on its way out, I hope the door swung back and hit it really hard on the backside. Good riddance. Indeed, 2010 was not a year that I will look back on with a smile. As Queen Elizabeth II described of the year 1992, 2010 was a real Annus Horribilis for me.
The interesting thing is that I started 2010 excited by all the new beginnings and possibilities that come with the start of a new decade. Looking back, I cannot think of any merits of 2010.
Anyway, keep the champagne on ice, do not ignite the fireworks and please hold back those streamers, 2011 is finally here. This time, I have zero expectations and have also made zero resolutions. However, I do know that this year I have a lot of things I want to get done. My To Do list for January is already a page long.
For Ghana, 2011 is supposed to be a great year. It provides the opportunity for the government to really prove itself and fulfil some of the many campaign promises made in Election 2008. This is vital since the next election is just under 2 years away at the end of 2012. Well, maybe the oil will help with this endeavour.
Speaking of expectations for 2011, I saw a billboard in town that declared "Judgement Day; May 21, 2011". This date seems strangely specific. It almost made me not notice that the date was given in 'American' and not 'English'. I am not sure who is behind this campaign but they are sure to be disappointed when May 21 comes around and the world does not come to an end.
Anyway, let's see if by this time next year I do not declare 2011 Annus Horribilis Maximus. Well, that is, if the world does not come to an end on 21 May 2011.
